Our History

Macedonia Baptist Church, one of the oldest congregations in North Georgia, has a long and storied history beginning all the way back to around 1835. For American History enthusiasts that was right at the beginning of the Indian Removal Act and what would become the Trail of Tears, which would have been a major event in our area. Just think of it, men, women and young people just like us, would have been discussing those current events and certainly reaching out to help minister to and pray for native families and tribes who were under great duress.

At that time, there were a few faithful families that desired to establish a Baptist Church here in the Dawnville (spelled Donneville at that time) community. Weekly, they would gather for worship, prayer and Bible study, seeking to honor God and serve their neighbors.

Around 1855, a man named Jordan Webb deeded the congregation some land upon which they would erect their first church home. (Edward McAbee, Lorenzo Wood, William Wiggins and David Williams received the land on behalf of MBC.) Up until the first church was built, it is assumed that the people met in each other’s homes to pray and worship God. The first church was a wooden structure, much like a log cabin, with two entrances, one for the Ladies and one for the Men, which was a common practice in those days.

For 150 years or so MBC remained a small community church that would average somewhere around 50-55 people year in and year out. In 1993, that all began to change; the church began to experience rapid growth that would see MBC reaching nearly 800 people in weekly worship attendance with 2 Sunday morning services. This would require a new Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall to be constructed in 1994. Shortly after that, a gymnasium would be added. Slowly the attendance began to level off—as a result, the early excitement felt by the congregation began to fade. However, these ups and downs in life and church-life, tend to ground God’s people and bring a solidarity to our faith. That is exactly what would happen here at MBC.

In the years ahead, our families, our community and our church would go through many difficult days and tiring challenges; but there was a noticeable resolve in the hearts of the people of Macedonia. The faith that was forged in the difficult days of challenge and despair would lead a core group of believers to bear the burden for the construction cost of the new buildings—1.2 million dollars—for over a quarter of a century.

Finally in 2023, by the grace of God and the commitment of the people of MBC, the church would race into the bright days of debt-freedom as we paid the debt off on September 19, 2023.

So, here we are in the modern day, still seeking to do the same thing as those who have come before us—honor and worship our great God and to serve the Dawnville community with the gospel of Christ. We think of ourselves as a body of like-minded Christian families who have covenanted together to be a faith-family on mission with God. Maybe God is leading you to join us!
